Therapy for Children and Teens
I offer counselling for children and adolescents that is developmentally informed, trauma-aware, and tailored to each young person’s unique needs, strengths, and stage of development.
For younger children, my work is grounded in Play Therapy. Play provides children with a natural and safe way to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences when words are hard to find. Play is how children express themselves, make sense of their experiences, and show us what’s going on in their inner world. Through play, drawing, stories, sand tray and creative activities, children can safely express feelings they may not yet have the words for. In therapy, children are supported to build emotional awareness, regulation skills, and confidence.
With older children and adolescents, counselling often focuses more directly on mental health support and skill-building. I draw on evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and psychoeducation. These approaches support young people to better understand their emotions, develop coping strategies, manage anxiety and low mood, and build resilience in everyday life.
I work closely with parents and caregivers to support a shared understanding of the child or young person’s needs and to strengthen the relationships around them. This may include parent consultations to explore strategies, build confidence, and support emotional regulation, communication, and connection at home.
With consent, I also collaborate with schools, early learning settings, and other professionals involved in the child’s care. Taking a care-team approach helps ensure that the strategies and insights developed in therapy are understood and supported across the child’s key environments. This collaborative approach supports consistency, reduces stress for the child, and helps therapeutic gains extend beyond the therapy room into everyday life.
The aim is to support not just the individual child, but the system around them, creating sustainable change through shared understanding, practical strategies, and aligned support.
