When looking for support for yourself or your child, the letters after a practitioner’s name can feel confusing. You might see AMHSW and wonder: what does it mean, and how is it different from a psychologist, psychiatrist, or general social worker?
A social worker with accreditation as a Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) is a highly skilled and experienced mental health clinician. AMHSWs take a person-in-environment approach, meaning they consider emotions, relationships, environment, and life circumstances when supporting clients.
AMHSWs can provide psychological strategies under Medicare. FPS is designed to help clients develop coping skills, manage emotions, and build resilience.
Examples include:
Cognitive and behavioural strategies – addressing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours
Interpersonal approaches – improving communication and relationships
Relaxation and stress-management – including mindfulness and breathing techniques
Skills training – problem-solving, social skills, or parent-focused strategies
Psychoeducation and motivational support – understanding experiences and supporting change
Trauma-informed approaches – safely processing difficult experiences, including EMDR where appropriate
FPS sessions are tailored, evidence-informed, and rebated through Medicare, making mental health care more accessible and practical.
AMHSWs are also recognised providers under Medicare, DVA, VOCAT, NDIS, and some private health funds, making professional mental health care more accessible.

Becoming an AMHSW
Not every social worker is an AMHSW. To earn this accreditation, a social worker must:
Complete a 4-year Bachelor degree or 2-year Master’s in social work
Have at least 2 years full-time equivalent experience (3360+ hours) in mental health in the past five years
Meet strict AMHSW credential criteria (I achieved my registration in 2013!)
Complete 30+ hours of professional development each year and maintain ongoing clinical supervision
Stay up to date with evidence-informed approaches and professional knowledge
This ensures that when you see an AMHSW, you’re working with a highly trained, experienced, and accountable practitioner.
Why You Might Choose an AMHSW
People often choose an AMHSW if they want:
Holistic, goal-focused support with practical strategies
A practitioner who understands complex life and family dynamics
Evidence-informed, compassionate care grounded in everyday life
Collaboration with other healthcare providers when needed
AMHSWs are especially helpful for clients navigating multiple systems, families with children, or anyone looking for therapy plus practical guidance.
Choosing the Right Mental Health Professional
There are lots of therapists with different training, qualifications, and preferred approaches.
Whether you choose a Counsellor, Psychologist, Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, or Psychotherapist, the most important thing is finding someone you can connect with and trust, who has the experience to support you with your specific challenges.
Feeling heard, validated, and supported to develop and grow is the foundation for meaningful progress in therapy.
